In an engaging game, United missed a penalty and then went ahead before two goals in a five-minute spell saw Millwall turn the game on its head.

David McGoldrick scored a second penalty to drag United back level and then netted a late winner to send the Blades fans back home happy.

And Wilder said: “I’m just so proud of the players, the way they went about it.

“We switched off for five minutes but you’ve got to give credit to the opposition too. They’re not on a great run at the moment but they’re a proud group of players and a proud manager.

“So this was never going to be an easy place to come and get a result. But what I’m so pleased about is that we kept playing the way we want to play, grinding them down and overloading and working the ball from side to side.

“When we went 2-1 down we still controlled the game and the tempo. We were just one pass away from finding that goal, which we did when we found the winner.”
