Sheffield United: No concerns over Aaron Ramsdale as our No.2 goalkeeper, says Blades' Alan Knill

The 18-year-old, who has been capped by England at U19 level, made just his second senior appearance on Sunday in the FA Cup at Bolton and despite conceding three times in defeat, caught the eye with a series of superb saves.

Ramsdale is expected to revert back to the bench this weekend for United’s League One clash against Swindon but Knill, Chris Wilder’s assistant manager at Bramall Lane, said: “Aaron, for someone so young, really looks the part.

“He’s a very competent young goalkeeper and for him, it’s only going to help playing at grounds like Bolton.

“He was unlucky to concede but that’s sometimes the life of a goalkeeper, you don’t need to have had a stinker to concede three goals.

“At the time, Bolton’s second seemed a long way out but looking back at it, it’s a great strike by Sammy Ameobi and Aaron can’t really do much about it.

“As I say, it’s only going to help him by playing at grounds like Bolton, which isn’t one of the smallest in the division, and it’ll benefit his education.”

Ramsdale made his senior debut in the first round, a 6-0 win over Leyton Orient at Bramall Lane, and has displaced George Long as United’s No.2 goalkeeper.

Jake Wright is expected to be fit for the visit of Swindon after missing the trip to the Macron Stadium with a hamstring strain, while fellow centre-half James Wilson could also be fit enough to make the bench.

Ethan Ebanks-Landell, who was refused permission by Wolves to play, should return to the side along with Billy Sharp and Mark Duffy, who were both rested at Bolton.

“If you ask Sheffield United supporters would they rather have a run in the cup or get out of this league, I think I know what the answer will be,” Knill said.

“So, we made changes accordingly.”
