Sheffield Wednesday: Double fitness boost for Owls

Wednesday chief Carlos Carvalhal has been handed a double fitness boost ahead of tomorrow's Hillsborough showdown with Ipswich Town.

Goalkeeper Keiren Westwood and striker Steven Fletcher are pushing for starts after shrugging off their injury problems.Westwood has resumed first-team training this week after missing the last two fixtures due to a back injury while Fletcher, included in the Scotland squad to face England in a World Cup qualifier next week, has recovered from the head knock he suffered at Derby County last weekend. Fletcher's head cut required several stitches.

Speaking at his press briefing today, Carvalhal said: "Keiren has started training again, which is good news. He is an important player for us and he has been training very well during the week."We believe he will be eligible to play on Saturday."

On Fletcher, who came on as a second half sub at the iPro Stadium, Carvalhal added: "The injury was in the moment. The next day I asked him, and he was better, and he started training on the first day of the week."With the way we train, we don’t have too many injuries. There are injuries which you cannot control, with surgery or broke something, but in general we don’t have too many muscular problems. Last season was the same."I think it’s to do with how we recover the players and prepare them to play."

Meanwhile, Wednesday's trip to Brighton and Hove Albion has been brought forward 24 hours and will now take place on Friday, January 20, kick-off 7:45pm. It will be screened on Sky Sports.
