Sheffield Wednesday fan to break world record for highest gig in history

Sheffield comedian Tom Wrigglesworth is set to break a new world record by performing the show at an altitude of 5,000 metres this Saturday.

Lifelong Owls fan Tom, who is a regular on TV and radio, is donning his Wednesday shirt en route and will plant a club flag on the mountain.

Tom will finish the nine-day mission on Saturday, where he and two other comedians will do a show at the Everest base camp.

Funny-man Tom, aged 39, said: “It’s a tough challenge but it will be worth it when we get there.

“Following the nine-day hike, we will perform a stand-up show at Base Camp, and achieve a new world record for the highest altitude comedy performance.

“Due to most gigs happening in cellars, this is not a highly contested record.”

Tom, who is raising money for charity, said: “Many sponsors have made this possible, but if you can make a donation, that would be wonderful, as all proceeds go to the magnificent cause that is Save the Children.

“Finally, when I’ve reached the camp, I will plant a Sheffield Wednesday and Green Bay Packers flag on the mountain as a gesture of my admiration to these two great football teams.”

Tom will be joined by comedians Wayne Deakin, Martin Mor and Mickey D for the ‘Stand up on Everest’ event.

The comedy group will perform on a purpose-built stage to their fellow climbers awaiting their turn to take on the world’s highest mountain.

Tom said: “It will be a great achievement and to say we’ve broken a world record at the same time as helping a worthy cause will be amazing.”
