Sheffield Wednesday: Refereeing mistakes have cost Owls four points, insists Carlos Carvalhal

The Owls boss fully appreciates it is a challenging job being a linesman or referee and said criticising them for mistakes was not his style.

But Carvalhal has broken his own policy of late, arguing “three bad decisions” have cost the Wednesday four points in their last three matches. He claims Gary Hooper had a goal wrongly chalked off for offside at Birmingham City with the scores level at St Andrew’s. The Blues prevailed thanks to a late strike by substitute Isaac Vassell.

Kieran Lee had a goal incorrectly disallowed in the first half of their win over Leeds United and the midfielder was unlucky not to be awarded a late penalty in Saturday’s loss at Bolton Wanderers.

The sense of injustice has prompted Carvalhal to speak his mind.

He told The Star: “I’m not complaining; I’m dealing with facts.

“We have had three bad decisions in three games in a row. These decisions create an impact on the points and position we have in the table.

“We scored a clear goal at Birmingham and could have won 1-0. We would probably have won the game.

“With three at Birmingham and a minimum of one at Bolton, we would have four more points and would be near the play-off positions. It is the difference between us having 16 and 20 points. It makes a massive difference.

“I don’t like to talk about these things or for it to take away from my responsibility but I’m here to defend Sheffield Wednesday and I think we deserve more respect from everybody.”
