The winger – who joined Wednesday on a season-long loan from Sunderland yesterday – has endured a tough few seasons with game time limited.

But after securing a switch to Hillsborough, the 26-year-old is confident he can show the type of form which led to his £2.5million switch to the Wearside two years ago.

“The last few years have been difficult for me and I’ve not played as many games as I would have wanted,” Buckley told The Star.

“This season is about showing what I can do. I’ve come here to play games and with that I think I will get back to my best.

“I want to show that I can still play at this level and I really think that I can do that here.

“It’s a very exciting time for the club and I’m really pleased to be part of it.

“The Championship is going to be tough this year but I think Wednesday will be right up there.”

Since joining Sunderland from Brighton and Hove Albion in 2014, Buckley has played only 42 games, including loan spells with Leeds United and Birmingham City.

He is out of contract at the Stadium of Light next summer and admits he is playing for his future.

“Whenever you reach the last year of your contract you have to be determined to impress and set yourself up for the future,” Buckley said.

“If I do well this season, it should secure me for the future so I need to be performing at my best.

“That’s what I’m here to do and winning promotion would be an ideal way to do it.”

Wednesday also yesterday extended the contract of goalkeeper Keiren Westwood until the summer of 2019.
