Shop left in limbo by Retail Quarter plans

I recently called into Stone the Crows on Cambridge Street and had a chat with the chap who works there.

We’ve known him for quite a few years and he’s been left in limbo by the council with regard to the proposed new Retail Quarter.

It seems he is still in the dark as to what is happening to the business.

It’s proposed that Stone the Crows is scheduled for the big steel ball treatment .

The building is not listed but it should be, as it was the Cambridge Street Chapel.

You can still see the pediment of the old building just over S.t.C. and this building is just as important as the Bethel Sunday School and Leah’s Yard.

If the proposals do go ahead and demolition is carried out on Cambridge Street, this brilliant shop will be moved again, and this will be the third time he’s been forced to move.

This shop is just the type the Moor/Cambridge Street needs. It has a vast stock of beautiful household items and goods, and would attract more footfall than Blacks and Ann Summers put together.

It’s a shop that deserves its rightful place in the plans for the Moor.

Why can’t the council treat this shop as an asset to the city and not as a chess piece that can be moved about at the whim of some faceless irk in the Town Hall?

The council should be helping the owners of this shop instead of enticing businesses that will not lift the Moor out of the doldrums.

Stone the Crows needs to be looked after and not forced out into a backwater.

It’s the type of business that needs to be treated as special – Costa Coffee, Ann Summers, Specsavers? I don’t think so.
