TRADERS in the Farm and Food tent at Derbyshire's Bakewell Show got to show off produce from as far afield as Germany.

Locally produced honey, Welsh pastry and German sausage were all on the menu alongside, of course, the famous Bakewell tart.

The treat-filled tent was full of punters desperate to both try and buy from the huge range of products available - many of which are produced locally.

"It has gone really well - the warm weather has definitely brought a few more people through the doors," said Tony Maggs, proprietor of Derbyshire-based honey-makers The Honey Pot.

"The idea behind locally-produced honey is just that, so it is great to come to a local show to sell it.

"The less distance we have to travel, the better. It is important to support local shows, fairs and farmers' markets."

Peak District-based firm The Derbyshire Smokery, who specialise in smoked food like fish and cheese, said the huge numbers of visitors offered great exposure.

"A lot of people have been in to talk to us and to try our products," said Ian Jennings, a business partner in the company. "Some of them buy and some don't but the exposure is the important thing. Perhaps they will remember us and come back."

Elsewhere in the tent children were being encouraged to take part in a cheese sculpting contest while outside animal experts paraded their prize winning breeds.

Cattle, dogs and horses all took to the ring before spectators were treated to a tug-of-war by Buxton police officers.
