Simply the best

DONCASTER schools were today reporting some of their best-ever A-level results.

McAuley School pupils were celebrating best ever results, with the pass rate for students achieving A-C pass rate up by around 10 per cent. And other schools revealed increases over their 2006 results.

Nigel Pattison, head at Armthorpe School, which only emerged from specials measures two years ago, said: "These are close to our best ever figures - we'll be up there in the top 200 state schools nationally again.

"It's very pleasing to have improved our results again - these are very good results for the school."

The first group of students to have completed their A-level courses at Thorne's Trinity Academy were also celebrating an 97 per cent pass rate.

School spokeswoman Sarah French said: "This year's Upper Sixth have already made history by being the first to complete two-year A-level courses at Trinity Academy in Thorne, which opened in September 2005.

"The overall pass rate of 97 per cent is a 10 per cent improvement on last year's A-levels, which were taken by students who spent just two terms at the Academy after transferring from the sixth form at Thorne Grammar.

"The average point score per student has increased by 50 points, or 25 per cent, since 2005."

Edlington school reported that 99 per cent of their students had passed at least one A-level.

Acting deputy head Kevin Grum said: "We are delighted with the success of our students again this year in what is our largest sixth form for many years."

He said the school had 99 per cent of students who had gained an A2 level qualification and a 92 per cent pass rate in all entries. Over half of the grades achieved were C and above. "We fully expect that with these results that our students will go on to the university of their choice including Oxbridge or begin their careers in the workplace," he added.

At Hayfield School pupils 208 passes at A-C level out of a total of 330 A-level entries by 81 students over 20 subjects - an improvement of 16 passes at A-C on last year's results.

Head Tony Storey described the results as "very pleasing".
