Speedway report: Peterborough Panthers 44 Sheffield Tigers 49

Just 24 hours after defeating local rivals Scunthorpe to leapfrog the Panthers in their League Cup group, the terrific Tigers strengthened their grip on the top spot with a remarkable victory.

It was a breathtaking all-around team display from the Owlerton outfit to overcome their highly-rated opposition and claim three points at what is notoriously one of the toughest tracks to visit at Premier League level.

Six Sheffield riders earned race wins in what was a memorable performance as their talented young side finally showcased their true potential after an inconsistent start to the season.

Flying Frenchman Dimitri Berge set the tone for the night ahead as he comprehensively stormed to victory in heat one. The in-form No.2 then wrapped up a fine evening with a paid win in his final ride as he partnered inspirational skipper Simon Stead to a comfortable 5-1 in heat 11 to all but wrap up victory.

The hosts attempted to launch a late fight-back as Nikolaj Busk Jacobsen earned a double points win in heat 12 – but with a 12 point deficit to overcome in the final four races it was too little too late.

Middle order man Kyle Howarth top scored for the visitors with a magnificent performance. He partnered Josh Bates to three brilliant 5-1s in heats three, seven and ten which ultimately made all the difference as young gun Bates also starred before emerging unscathed from a spectacular heat 15 crash.

All-action No.5 Jason Garrity prevailed in a blockbuster battle with Ulrich Ostergaard to claim his second race win in heat six as the Tigers seized control early on.

Former Panther Richard Hall also ended a battling display with a timely victory in the penultimate race to secure the win on the night. His teenage reserve partner, Nathan Greaves, struggled to make an impact but it was nonetheless a fantastic night for Sheffield as they continue to develop over the opening weeks of the season.

With the club hosting the prestigious British Under 21 Championship this Thursday (7.30), the Tigers will have to wait until Thursday, April 21 (7.30) to get back on track as they welcome Ipswich to Owlerton.
