Support for cyclists from new HUB

The HUB, which was funded by the Department for Transport’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund, offers a range of cycle services to residents and businesses and aims to remove the barriers that prevent people from getting into cycling.

Up to 30 bikes can be stored at the HUB, at the interchange on Eldon Street, at any one time. The HUB also offers bike maintenance workshops, a ‘loan a bike’ service, free toilet and shower facilities, bike servicing, repairs and free Dr Bike check-ups. There is also an unwanted bike recycling depot and regular recycled bike sales.

The Mayor of Barnsley, Coun Brian Mathers, who officially opened the HUB earlier this month, said: “I’m very impressed with the facilities available at the new Barnsley Cycle HUB.

“It is so important to have a service like this in the town that helps people to get all the support they need to get on their bikes and to stay on them, leading to healthier, happier and more active lives.”

HUB Manager, Adam Simmonite, added: “Since the official opening we have seen a brilliant response from the residents of Barnsley.

“This is the time of year people want to get more active and change their lifestyles, and the Barnsley Cycle HUB has launched at the perfect time to go from strength to strength.”

The HUB’s winter opening hours, until March, will be 7.30am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday. Secure indoor parking is available Monday to Saturday from 6am to 1pm and on Sundays from 10am to 5.30pm. For a limited time, new registrants will be given a free starter pack, which includes a high-visability vest, a seat cover, rucksack cover and repair kit.
