Talented Sheffield pupil's top finish at language final

Talented Sheffield High School pupil Nawar Hussain claimed the runner-up spot in the French category at the national final of the Routes into Languages Spelling Bee.

More than 75,000 youngsters from 580 schools across the country took part in this year’s competition and Nawar first won through class, school and regional heats to reach the national final of the French category at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge.

The competition involved Year 7 pupils competing to correctly translate and then spell the most number of words in French, Spanish or German in just one minute.

It is the brainchild of Cambridge teacher Jane Driver and has been extended across England and Wales by Routes into Languages, a Higher Education Funding Council for England supported programme which features a consortium of universities working with schools and colleges to encourage pupils to study languages.

Sarah Schechter, project manager of Routes into Languages East, based at Anglia Ruskin University, ran the national competition and organised last Friday afternoon’s final.

The trophies and certificates were presented by Cambridge MP Daniel Zeichner.
