Tevendale hits two for Hallam

A SEVENTH away win of the season saw Hallam safely through to round two of the of the FA Vase in what was otherwise a disappointing first round, as Parkgate, Maltby Main, Armthorpe Welfare and AFC Emley all crashed out.

The Blues won 3-1 at North West Counties Division Two side Ashton Town in a tie that saw James Tevendale score twice on his return to the club from Belper Town.

Scott Bates gave Hallam the lead after five minutes from close range after Gavin Hunter returned a Ryan O'Carroll cross back into the middle and a minute later it was 2-0, Tevendale scoring from just outside the box.

The tie was as good as sealed three minutes before the break with Tevendale's low strike 16 yards out.

The home side pulled one back on 75 minutes through John Bullough.

Parkgate were well beaten 5-0 at NWC Division Two leaders Kirkham & Wesham, who made it a hat-trick of victories over Northern Counties East sides after knocking out Worsbrough Bridge Athletic and Brodsworth Welfare, 3-1 and 4-3 in previous rounds.

Two down at half-time, understrength Parkgate were sunk by a third just past the hour and two goals in the final five minutes rubbed it in.

Maltby Main produced a decent enough performance at Squires Gate but went down 3-1 to the Blackpool side. The Miners trailed to a Lee Catlow effort three minutes from the break and it looked all over when Mike Bird made it 2-0 in the 71st minute but Maltby pulled one back three minutes later when Mike Taylor drilled in a shot and strong pressure set up the Miners to force extra-time only to be caught out in the 83rd minute when Catlow scored the hosts' third.

Armthorpe Welfare suffered their first home defeat of the season when going out 1-0 to Northern League side Jarrow Roofing Bolden.

In a lacklustre tie what action there was came in the last five minutes, Gary Brown's penalty put the visitors ahead and in a frantic finish Armthorpe had Lewis Britteon sent-off for two yellow cards in quick succession.

With Jarrow defending doggedly Armthorpe had a good penalty shout denied before a free-kick in stoppage time was eventually cleared after an almighty scramble in the box.

AFC Emley had few complaints over their 2-0 exit at Bootle, Andy Fowler scoring on 51 and 83 minutes.
