The birds and the bees

The recent photos appearing in The Star 'Letters' of entwined damsel flies, consequently reminded me of the attached photo of a couple of interlocked bumble(?) bees I managed to snap at the Co-op car park recycling area in Stocksbridge last summer.
Mating bees?Mating bees?
Mating bees?

They were moving about, seemingly locked together, and hence it was difficult to get a clear photo of them before they flew off still entwined, presumably having been spooked by my presence with camera thrusting towards them.

Since then I’ve wondered precisely what type of bee they were and if they were indeed in the process of courting/mating.

And if not, then, what they actually were up to?
