Double decker buses will take a maximum of 24 passengers, with 13 on the top deck and 11 on the bottom, while single deckers will be limited to 13 passengers, according to Unite.

The trade union said the limits, which are also in place in West Yorkshire, are believed to be the first to be introduced by bus companies anywhere in the UK.

The numbers, which represent between 25 and 30 per cent of normal capacity, have been agreed by operators including First and Stagecoach, it added.

Unite said the limits were drawn up following talks with bus companies and South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE).

Once the limit has been reached, it added, a ‘full’ notice will be displayed on the front of the vehicle.

Unite said that the number of buses serving each route would be reviewed regularly, with more added if necessary to reduce waiting times.

Unite regional officer Phil Bown said: “We have worked constructively with the bus companies and the PTAs over the last month to formulate this ‘limited passenger’ policy which, we believe, will be an effective barrier to the spreading of coronavirus.”

Limiting passengers is one of a number of measures being introduced on buses in South Yorkshire.

Passengers will be encouraged to wear face coverings, extra cleaning will take place and signs will show passengers where to sit safely.
