For fellow campaigners and the 14,969 people who have signed the SORT petition to date, party politics are just not the issue. The motivation is to argue for a tree policy which retains our heritage trees which substantially contribute to the environmental and health needs of our increasingly polluted city.

The council’s contract with Amey apparently fails to recognise the vital role played by our roadside trees in providing well-documented environmental benefits and counteracting pollution.

No-one would argue against safe roads and footpaths fit for purpose but these can be achieved by less drastic strategies than the felling of 3,599 roadside trees, as the SORT presentation at Highway Trees Advisory Forum 2 demonstrated in September 2015.

The reality is that the Council’s inflexible position and its reluctance to accept these alternative strategies is a reflection of its contractual commitments to Amey and the straitjacket of local party politics.
