UPDATE: Police respond to ‘knife scare’ in Sheffield city centre

Sheffield city centre was brought to a standstill after police attended reports that a person had a knife following a dispute.

Shoppers looked on as trams heading away from the Cathedral were stranded while police carried out their enquiries on York Street at the junction with Fargate.

Three police cars and a ambulance responder attended the scene at around 12.50pm.

Officers are still in the city centre area reassuring the public.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “Police were called to the York Street area of Sheffield earlier today following reports an individual was in possession of a knife.

“Based on this information, specialist resources were sent to the area to ensure public safety.

“Upon arrival, however, officers received reports that there had been a dispute between a group of people known to each other, who had left the area. No persons have been injured.”
