Vandals attack Millers' training pitch

SECURITY at Rotherham United's training ground is to be stepped up afterrepeated attacks by vandals.

In the latest attack yobs damaged the newly-laid playing surface at the Hooton Lodge training ground by digging up turf and leaving anti-club graffiti.

The playing surface had just been relaid at a cost of more than 120,000 after it was damaged when the River Don burst its banks in June's floods.

The attack is the latest in a series of incidents which have included youths riding trials bikes across the pitch and equipment being stolen.

Now club bosses are planning to introduce 24-hour security patrols at the isolated ground.

Millers director Dave Coston said: "Enough is enough. We will be introducing 24-hour dog wardens to keep the idiots out. If we catch them they will be handed over to the police.

"Everyone knows we are a struggling football club without a lot of money.

"What makes these people want to do this, I don't know.

"We will not just lie down and die, these people should stay away from the training ground or risk being caught."

News of the latest attack came after the MIllers had just held one of their best-ever open days at their Millmoor ground.

Mr Coston said: "Club staff, directors, players, management and their wives and friends gave their own time to make the day a success.

"The money we made on Sunday will now have to go on repairs and that is so sad."
