'Vet' Foster opens up GB squad return

Six-time World short-course champion Mark Foster was cautious about the prospect of a possible return to the Great Britain team after claiming the 50 metres freestyle title at the ASA National Championships in Sheffield.

The 37-year-old produced his fastest swim since 2003 to touch in 22.36seconds and claim his second crown of the week following his 50m butterfly victory.

The Bath University swimmer now heads the British rankings and has fulfilled the criteria for selection to the GB team at the World short-course championships in Manchester in April.

Despite announcing his intention to quit international swimming after last year's Commonwealth Games, Foster never officially retired and now he stands on the brink of a return to the team.

Foster said: "If I am selected I will make a decision over whether to compete.

"And if I am selected, I will train properly again."

He was non-committal, though, on the prospect of competing at the Olympic trials in March, saying: "I don't know. I'll see how everything goes."

Matt Tutty was second and Simon Burnett third.

Other winners included David Carry (200m freestyle), Sophie Caul (200m individual medley) and Katy Sexton (50m backstroke).

The finals tonight include World Championship silver medallist Kirsty Balfour in the 200m breaststroke and the 200m backstroke.
