Video: 'Seen them given, seen them not given' - Brentford boss Dean Smith on Sheffield Wednesday's penalty claim

Fernando Forestieri went down in the box under a challenge Harlee Dean but referee Darren Bond was unmoved and to make matters worse for Wednesday, the visitors took the lead almost immediately after call for a spot kick, through John Egan.

Dean, himself, scored the second to give the Owls a huge task after the break but Forestieri's sublime strike in the dying minutes proved to be too late for Carlos Carvalhal's side to rescue a point.

Smith said, having seen the incident again on television, that Forestieri's penalty claim had merit.

"I was a long way away from it. I've seen it since; I have seen them given but I have also seen them not given," he said. "(Forestieri) has gone down a couple of times easily and the referee's played on, whether that was in the referee's mind I don't know. I've certainly had enough decisions go against me."

Smith, a former Owls player, felt his side were worth their win in the end.

"We knew it was going to be a tough game but I thought first half we controlled it," he said. "We started well and passed really well and had a couple of chances. We deserved to go in at the break in front.

"We had to defend manfully; they had some chances they will feel they should have taken. Forestieri gets a little bit of magic to stick one in the top corner and I think that was the only way Daniel Bentley was going to be beaten.

"They put us under a lot of pressure, certainly in the second half I thought the crowd were onto the referee and he didn't disappoint with some of his decisions."

Carlos Carvalhal said of the referee's display: “It was a very poor performance (from Bond), he made everybody nervous, he made the fans nervous, he made my players nervous and he made me nervous. “He didn’t see a clear penalty, he didn’t see a block on (Vincent) Sasso for their second goal and there were a lot of faults and little things that made everyone nervous."
