United had fallen behind when former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Chris Maguire's cross found defender Chey Dunkley who headed in the opening goal for the home side.

However, 10 minutes into the second half Sharp notched up his 25th goal of the season in typical predatory to equalise before Kieron Freeman put the Blades in front with an excellent finish.

Goal number 26 for the campaign arrived from the spot via the golden boots of Sharp and while Toni Martinez pulled one back in injury time, United's march to promotion drove on.

“To show that character, on what was a big occasion, speaks volumes about the lads’ character and desire," said assistant boss Alan Knill. “They are such an honest bunch and such a tight bunch too. “That’s what gets them through in situations like this. They don’t know when they are beaten and never, ever give up.”

Oxford United manager Michael Appleton, meanwhile blamed 'sloppy' defending for his side's defeat.

"The goals were very sloppy," he said. "The first one we’ve got to do our jobs properly, the second one was actually a cross, so they got a bit fortunate there, and the third one was just a mess.

“It was just a kick in the teeth we conceded the third goal, because as any home side if you’re only a goal down going into the last few minutes you’ll always have an opportunity.”
