Ricky Holmes put Charlton in front with a well-taken free kick and Karl Robinson's side struck the bar before the Blades really got going and when Jack O'Connell leveled there was a sense that it was only a matter of time before another would arrive.
Danny Lafferty was the man to provide it and though at times United toiled a little, they were well worth the victory which stretched their lead over third-placed Fleetwood to 10 points.
