We are with Europe'¦

Unfortunately like Margaret Hodge I also lived through the second world war. As a result Winston Churchill became my life-time hero so I hate to hear him quoted out of context.

Yes , Churchill did say that he would like to see a United Europe linking Germany and France along with others to prevent another war in Europe and create a European Family.

However he made it very clear that Britain should not be part of it saying that we are with Europe but not of it. We are linked but not compromised.

In 1950 as leader of the Tory Party he strongly opposed any attempts to link us to the European Coal and Steel Community.

WhileI do not always agree with Terry Palmer’s letters they provide a good read and create enough controversy to ensure a good supply of differing views so here’s one for Terry.

I believe Terry to be a secret Tory! Why you may ask? Well I think the old view applies, he being over 40 must have passed the two stages in life. If you are not a socialist in your 20s then you have no feelings for others. If you are not a Tory in your 40s then you have no brains.
