Wickersley look to complete cup double

WICKERSLEY have the first of two big cup finals on successive weekends when they take part in the prestigious Heavy Woollen Cup final on Sunday.

They face Wrenthorpe of the Central Yorkshire League at Hanging Heaton (12.00).

They are the first South Yorkshire League side to reach the final of the competition which goes back to 1883 and is believed to be the oldest cricket cup competition in England.

Barnsley, from the Yorkshire League, have won it for the last two seasons but it is only in recent years that South Yorkshire clubs have taken part in a competition which has a huge reputation in the Central Yorkshire ‘woollen’ belt and has been won by many of the top Bradford League teams.

Wrenthorpe, challenging for their league title, have been splashing out to lure some excellent players out of the Bradford League and among them are former Yorkshire all-rounder Gary Fellows, who was at Pudsey St Lawrence, and another former Yorkshire player David Paynter.

Their ability was demonstrated when they crushed holders Barnsley in an earlier round, having amassed 328-2.
