Rovers in cup test

DONCASTER Rovers will be bidding to beat Lincoln City at home in the Carling Cup for the first time in tonight's first round tie.

The two clubs had needed a third game to settle their first round tie the 1976-77 season after battling out two 1-1 draws.

The decider was played at Nottingham Forest's City Ground with Rovers going through on penalties after the two teams were level on 2-2 at the end of extra-time.

Whereas Rovers picked up a point from a goalless draw against visiting Millwall in Saturday's League One opener, Lincoln slumped to a 4-0 League Two defeat against Shrewsbury Town at Sincil Bank.

"We had them watched on Saturday, as they did us, and it wasn't a 4-0 game," said Rovers boss Sean O'Driscoll.

"They didn't concede their second goal until the 57th minute, so they were in contention for an hour.

"I would imagine that their players are pleased to have a midweek game to give them the chance to put the record straight."

For many years the The Imps had a reputation as a long-ball game side, but O'Driscoll says that their style has altered following management changes over the last 12 months or so.

"We also had them watched in a pre-season game against Watford and they are a good footballing side," he said.

O'Driscoll says he expects Imps to put up a spirited showing.

"There is the incentive for both sides of a seeded draw against either a Championship or a Premier League side in the second round."

The Rovers boss again underlined that promotion to the Championship was the club's top priority this season.

But added:"Providing that we keep clear of a lot of injuries I think we've got a strong enough squad to give it a go in the various cup competitions. We'd like to progress a bit further in the Carling Cup."

O'Driscoll said he was undecided as to whether to play the same team as Saturday, or make several changes.

Midfielder Paul Green is available again after missing the Millwall game with a dental problem and is expected to feature on the bench if not selected in the starting line-up.

O'Driscoll is hoping to bring in another centre-back this week.

He revealed the club, who bid a club-record 300,000 for Preston's Kelvin Wilson during the close season, were curently in talks.

The Doncaster boss, who would prefer a permanent deal, gave no hint of the man he is targetting.

But he did say: "Something might come to fruition this week."
