Matt Taylor keen to keep veteran at Rotherham United

The Millers captain, who is 37, is out of contract in the summer but looks set to stay in some capacity.

He is still an integral part of the team, although cannot play every week, while Wood has also expressed an interest in coaching and recently took the Millers in a caretaker capacity before Taylor was appointed.

Taylor said when asked whether he wants him to stick around: “Without a shadow of a doubt.

“You want good people around you, whether that's players, coaching staff, medical staff, staff at the stadium. The club need to keep hold of good people - not only good people, people who have done fantastically well for the club and been good servants.

“It's not a 'reward' though. It's always about what's needed. Woody is certainly someone we identify - whether it's in a playing or coaching capacity - as someone who has what we need.

“Rightly so, there will be conversations further down the line. It will also depend on what he wants to do himself and where he sees is future lying.

“I know he is settled in the area. He's got family. As much as it's about what I want him to do and what we feel is right as a club, ultimately it's about what he wants to do.”

Taylor says discussions will take place about exactly what role Wood will perform next season.

“That will obviously be dependent on performances, dependent on how the team function,” he said.

“I think I'm right in saying that Woody always goes towards the end of the season to see if he wants to continue, to see what his future looks like. Is it in a coaching capacity? Is it in a playing capacity? Is it a hybrid role?

“Those discussions will continue as the season progresses. In terms of changing-room value, with his experience and with the respect he has among the group, he is absolutely second to none.”

Wood could be involved as the Millers head to Luton for their final game before the Championship break.

Conor Washington could also feature as his knee injury is not as bad as first thought, but Grant Hall, Georgie Kelly (both hamstring), Tolaji Bola, Shane Ferguson and Jamie McCart are all out.
