If there was a suggestion that Rotherham's players had stopped playing for boss Paul Warne, then they answered those doubts emphatically against Bristol City.

After a run of seven defeats from their last nine games, Warne admitted his job was under threat.

But his players responded in style by delivering their best performance of the season in a 2-0 win over the Robins.

A first-half of domination was then capped four minutes before the break as Michael Smith doubled his side's lead.

Warne's men, full of the bustle and thunder which they always show when they are at their best, enjoyed a trouble-free half to enjoy a first win in six games.

There was little doubt in their performance that they are still giving everything for their manager.

Warne's relief was palpable after the game, highlighted by the fact he sent first-team coach Matt Hamshaw to speak to the media while he enjoyed a celebratory glass if wine.

Hamshaw, a Millers fan from Rawmarsh, was unlikely to say anything different, but he came out in staunch defence of his boss.

“I have just seen him having a little sip of red wine which is unheard of for him,” he said.

“He is not feeling pressure any more, but he shouldn't.

“It's easy for me to say because I am part of his backroom staff, but the job he has done at this club over the four years is remarkable, the turnaround in the football club, and sometimes when you are in the thick of it you don't see what is happening.

“We have got assets on the pitch, we have sold players in the past, we have been in League One twice and got promotion out of it.

“The fact he has even had questions I just totally disagree.

People are allowed their opinions, I just think the small minority of people who want change, I understand that.

“I have been a footballer and a football fan and I am well aware of that, we know what industry we are in.

“In my opinion, he is the best man for the job. He is a great manager and he will have a successful career as a manager.

“We showed what we are all about and what the lads think of him as a manager.”
