Old boys put Reds to test

BARNSLEY cast-offs Neil Austin and Tommy Wright have points to prove tonight to the manager who discarded them.

Oakwell boss Simon Davey turned the pair away. Striker Wright last season and defender Austin during the summer.

They are back in Barnsley this evening for a Carling Cup tie with their new club League Two, Darlington.

Davey is expecting no quarter given in a battle to progress.

"Darlington spent a lot of money in the summer and they've got two old boys from Barnsley in Neil Austin and Tommy Wright," Davey explained.

"They'll be a physical side and it will be a tough game. They've won on Saturday, they'll be confident but we should have enough in our armoury to win.

"We're a Championship side, they're a League Two outfit but that goes out of the window when you kick-off. They'll fancy their chances like every team does that goes into a cup competition. We feel we've got enough in our squad to win."

Davey will field his strongest possible side using the squad from Saturday.

He hopes to give new keeper Heinz Muller his debut and could start Kayode Odejayi as one of his strikers.

Muller missed Saturday's game because international clearance did not come through in time.

Davey is looking on tonight's tie as a quick fix after Saturday's dismal 4-1 defeat by Coventry.

"We felt that we did well in the first hour. We had chances in the first half to perhaps go in the lead. Unfortunately we didn't," Davey recalled. "We're disappointed with the result and we collapsed after their second goal. That's something we have to put right.

"We got an opportunity to put that right straight away. I'm sure we will do. We will go to win the game, we'll play a very, very strong team. We won't be resting a heap of players, like as has happened in the past and as other clubs do. We're going to be sure that we've got a side out that can win."

Reflecting back again, he added: "Kayode Odejayi came on and did very, very well. The new players such as Dennis Souza, Rohan Ricketts, Andy Johnson, Miguel Mostto all seem to come good but we lost 4-1 so all that is disguised."
