'Proud' Matt Taylor reveals his feelings ahead of Rotherham United bow as manager

Taylor will take charge of the Millers for the first time after being appointed on Tuesday when Millwall visit in the Sky Bet Champ

The 40-year-old signed a four-year contract after agreeing to leave Exeter following four years in charge.

He becomes Paul Warne’s replacement and is thrown into the deep end, with the visit of the Lions.

Taylor and his assistant Wayne Carlisle took training on Monday and Tuesday so have had some time with the players ahead of the game.

Taylor, whose wife gave birth to their first child six weeks ago, is looking forward to experiencing the AESSEAL New York Stadium at its best.

“Immensely proud, I am immensely proud to get the opportunity to manage a great football club like Rotherham,” he said.

“I will try not to be emotional, but as I walk out and watch that team perform it will certainly get the hairs on the back of my neck standing up.

“I know my wife and baby will be here to watch that as well, so an incredibly proud day for myself and my family.

“But the most important thing is what happens on that football pitch. And we want a team that reflects the town, as simple as that.

“It has happened recently and that is what the foundation of the club’s success has been built on and I feel I understand that a little bit already.”

Taylor was not officially announced until Tuesday afternoon after legal issues held it up.

But he had been in and around the club since Monday morning and has spent some time with the players.

“It has been an interesting few days,” he said.

“It was important I took that game on Saturday for Exeter City, even with the interest from Rotherham.

“It was important I finished my duty to Exeter. Since then, the decision was made to join this fantastic football club which is Rotherham.

“First of all it was a case of getting up here and getting all the contract stuff sorted out. Luckily I have spent a couple of days at the training ground.

“A fantastic group of players, their attitude has been spot on. It has been a really positive first few days, even if I have not had time to breathe.”
