Reds wigan test cheer

BARNSLEY went down to Premiership Wigan Athletic last night but Reds boss Simon Davey declared the outing just what his side needed at this stage of their preparation.

The Reds have taken a progressive step up in quality of opposition and Davey felt that Wigan would provide them with the sort of game needed at this point.

"We were playing a Premiership team tonight and that was a good step up from what we have had so far," said Davey.

"It was just what we expected from Wigan and was just what we wanted, and needed, at this stage. The Premiership start the same week as we do this season and it meant that Wigan were quite advanced in their preparations and they would have welcomed this sort of game.

"We got some more fitness into the players, which is the important thing, but they also got more time together on the pitch and that is important too when new players have been introduced into the squad.

Wigan boss Chris Hutchings said the game developed into what he was exactly looking for - "Barnsley gave us a good test.

"They stayed up last season but I think they look stronger and I think they will do much better this time."

Davey took another look at Brazilian trialist Dennis Souza and there was also an outing for ex-Blades full back Rob Kozluk who has been missing through injury.

Lewin Nyatanga was back in Oakwell action after his loan move from Derby which he marked with the goal in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Rotherham United.

Davey made six changes during the second half which meant all the outfield players got some action.

Wigan, whose 2-0 win was secured with goals from Jason Koumas and a highly dubious penalty from Danny Landzaat, had a strong side out.
