Sheffield United are still without a permanent boss, with Paul Heckingbottom looking after on-pitch matters since the departure of Chris Wilder in mid-March.

Slavisa Jokanovic, as reported by The Star, has emerged as a firm target to take the job on a long-term basis, with the Blades expected to announce a new manager within the next two weeks.

And another team who have recently been confirmed as relegated from the Premier League could also be looking for a new man to lead the charge in the Championship.

West Brom are understood to be meeting with current manager Sam Allardyce on Wednesday to discuss his future at the Hawthorns, with the Baggies having had their drop into the second tier rubber-stamped at the weekend.

Allardyce took over from Slaven Bilic in December and among the detail in his 18-month contract was a break clause that either party could activate at the end of this season.

According to Sky Sports, as things stand it is believed that Allardyce is unsure whether he fancies the slog of a season in the Championship, while from the club’s point of view, they are hoping to ascertain how committed the former Newcastle, West Ham, Bolton (and many more) chief is to trying to get them back into the top flight at the first attempt.

As a result, West Brom have drawn up a shortlist of prospective replacements in case the two parties decide to go their separate way and Wilder is reported to be on it.

The legendary former United boss has been linked with a few clubs since his departure from Bramall Lane but this may be the one that appeals most – passionate fan base, a team that needs a bit of a shake and with ambitions to be in the Premier League and stay there.

So maybe Wilder will get that chance to finally give United fans a wave goodbye after all.
