Long, now 27 years old, came through United’s youth academy and played over 100 times between the posts before moving to Hull in 2018.

He turned down the offer of a new deal at Hull – after the club opted against activating an extension to his present terms and tried to renegotiate a fresh contract - and could face the Blades next season after their relegation back to the Championship.

He made only eight appearances for the Tigers last season as they won the League One title to seal a return to the Championship.

“For the past three years - I’ve loved playing for the club and to finish with promotion back to the Championship was brilliant,” Long wrote on Instagram alongside a picture celebrating the title.

“All the best for the future.”
