Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was in stunning form in the first half of the Premier League match at Bramall Lane, denying Andy Robertson, Curtis Jones, Sadio Mane and Trent Alexander-Arnold among others with a string of excellent stops that meant the Blades went into the break at 0-0 against the reigning champions.

The seemingly impenetrable Ramsdale was finally breached early in the second half when sloppy defending from an Alexander-Arnold cross – United’s players thought the ball had gone out of play and switched off – allowed Jones to open the scoring for Liverpool.

A shot from Roberto Firmino which deflected off Kean Bryan and will go down as an own goal against the Blades defender sealed the victory for the previously struggling Reds and speaking afterwards, Klopp knew his side had been in a game, even if they ended the encounter pretty comfortably.

And most of that frustration had come down to Ramsdale.

Klopp said: "I'm not sure you ever play well enough, especially when you aren't scoring and you can imagine our situation, it's not as if we sit in the dressing room and think "it's all good."

"The plan was to keep going, do the same stuff again, because Sheffield [United] in the moments when we played exactly how we wanted to play, they couldn't deal with us.

"Ramsdale played an incredible game, made a few outstanding saves - as did Adrian early on. So when you know that Sheffield United lost a lot of games this year but all by the smallest margin, it's clear that these games stay exciting til the end.

"In the first half we should have scored three times, I think we scored two goals and I think Robbo [Robertson] could have had a hat-trick tonight pretty much, so that showed what we created was really good and the finishing was good enough for today. We know we can improve that."
