The striker scored 26 goals for Wednesday earlier in his career, before joining the Blades on loan last season and helping them into the Premier League with three goals in 16 games.

A short statement on Cardiff's website read: "Cardiff City Football Club can confirm that Gary Madine has left the Bluebirds by mutual consent.

"We'd like to thank Gary for his efforts since joining the Club in January 2018 and wish him well with his future career."

Cardiff paid Bolton £6m for Madine in January 2018, and he helped them get over the line in that season's promotion race before joining Chris Wilder’s Blades on loan, and repeating that feat.

During his spell at United he opened up on his time at Cardiff.

"I didn’t really get going at Cardiff and felt a bit hard done by at times,” Madine said.

"I’d play the difficult games away from home and when we had a so-called easier game at home, I wasn’t playing.

"I wasn’t getting any chances so I lost fitness, confidence and goals, and it wasn’t a good place for me.

"I was six hours away from home and I’m a bit of a home boy, I like being home.”
