The confirmation that Wilder had officially left Bramall Lane led to an outpouring of emotion from the United fanbase, varying from grief to anger and everything else in between.

The Saudi royal had guaranteed in a radio interview earlier this season that Wilder would not be sacked if they were relegated to the Championship this season, as well as promising the manager would be allowed to make two loan signings in the January window in a bid to stave off relegation from the Premier League.

But those reinforcements did not arrive, which was just one of a number of disagreements between board and manager - resulting in Saturday's confirmation that Wilder had departed by mutual consent.

"Look, Prince Abdullah is totally committed to the football club," chief executive Bettis said.

"He has been since day one and still is, and the commitment he's shown and the investment in the club we've made has shown that.

"The decision for Chris to depart was not taken lightly. Prince Abdullah was extremely supportive of Chris during this positive period when we haven't been getting the results.

"For all of that time, Chris was still our man and was the person who would take the club forward even if relegation happened."

Life without Wilder began disastrously for United, when they were hammered 5-0 by Leicester City on Sunday. U23s boss Paul Heckingbottom was on the touchline after being installed as temporary boss until the end of the season.
