Paul Heckingbottom has sounded a note of caution over Benie Traore despite expressing his “excitement” about bringing the Ivorian to Sheffield United.

The striker, who scored 14 times in his 16 games for Swedish champions Hacken before moving to Bramall Lane, has penned a four-year deal in South Yorkshire. Traore flew out to Portugal to meet some of his new teammates after the deal, for an undisclosed fee, was completed, but he missed Wednesday night’s friendly with Estoril to return to Sweden and begin preparations for his dream move to England.

At just 20 years of age, Traore’s potential is obvious but there is also an acceptance amongst United’s coaching staff that he is far from the finished article and some patience will be required while he gets to grips with life in English football, and in the Premier League.

“I’m pleased,” Heckingbottom said of his newest recruit, who joined Anis Slimane and Yasser Larouci at United during their pre-season camp at the City of Football resort in Portugal. “I think we'll see exciting moments from him.

“He's got really good pace and he's sharp, electric. If you watch his highlights, you’d be impressed but again, we have to work with him. He's a work in progress. He's young and hungry and wants to do well, we've bought a player with potential. With exciting moments in him and who we want to work with.

“We're pleased to get him. He's had to go back to Sweden to get the process started with his visa but it was important that we got him over here to meet everyone and make a fuss of him, so he can start to feel a part of it. We're just looking forward to getting back to Shirecliffe and working with him.”
