United, who travelled to Merseyside on the back of successive defeats and 11 in their last 13 games, looked more like their old selves as they dominated the Europe-chasing hosts for large parts of the game.
Teenager Daniel Jebbison marked his full Premier League debut with the winning goal, and could have had a second but for a smart save from Jordan Pickford.

“We’ve had other good performances this season that have been undone with quality, but today we were very good and thoroughly deserved it. It was probably our best defensive display I’ve seen in a long time.
“All season they’ve put in performances that have been worthy of points, we deserved it today and it’s a good reward because it’s tough when you play well and don’t get points.”
On Jebbison, who justified the decision to play him ahead of United’s record signing Rhian Brewster, Heckingbottom added: “That’s where he’s scored his goals, in between the posts in the six yard box, so it’s credit to him.
