Sheffield United loan watch: Regan Slater 'came on too late' for Hull City and Tyler Smith makes another substitute appearance for Swindon Town

Sheffield United were not in action at the weekend due to the international break – which also meant no game time for several of their players who are currently on loan with other clubs across England and Europe.

Luke Freeman (Nottingham Forest), Rhys Norrington-Davies (Luton Town), David Parkhouse (Hartlepool United), Marcus Dewhurst (Carlisle United), Ismaila Coulibaly (Beerschot, Belgium) and Stephen Mallon (Derry City) did not feature for their clubs at the weekend due to there being no game or because they were on international duty themselves.

Goalkeeper Jake Eastwood is still recovering from a long-term thigh injury and is not expected to be in contention for Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership for another fortnight.

But Tyler Smith and Regan Slater did play at the weekend.

Let’s take a look at how they got on.

Striker Smith joined League One outfit Swindon Town on a season-long loan in August.

The 21-year-old, who has not made a senior appearance for United, scored on his debut for the Robins in their 3-1 win over Rochdale on the opening day of the season but hasn’t netted since and was named among the substitutes for a third successive game for the home game against AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

He replaced Brett Pitman in the 73rd minute, but was unable to help his side as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat.

Jonathan Leighfield, of the Swindon Advertiser, gave Smith a score of six out 10 and wrote: “Smith made willing runs but was rarely passed to – perhaps came on too late when Wimbledon had already dropped deep.”

United allowed the 21-year-old midfielder to join League One side Hull City earlier this month on a season-long loan.

Slater made his second appearance for the Tigers as a 76th minute substitute in the 4-1 defeat to Joey Barton’s Fleetwood Town in front of the Sky Sports cameras at Highbury on Friday evening.

Barry Cooper, City correspondent for Hull Live, gave Slater five out of 10 and wrote: “For me, should have probably come on at half-time and his introduction came too late in the day.”
