Sheffield United sign former Rangers man Wes Foderingham

Sheffield United have signed goalkeeper Wes Foderingham, as Chris Wilder begins the process of reshaping his squad ahead of next season.

The former Rangers player, aged 29, becomes the first new arrival at Bramall Lane this summer after leaving Ibrox in May.

United confirmed they have been monitoring Foderingham’s progress for “a number of years” following his unveiling last night. His arrival is designed to bolster competition for places rather than replace the on-loan Dean Henderson, whose long-term future in South Yorkshire remains unclear.

Foderingham, previously of Crystal Palace, Fulham and Swindon Town, made 143 appearances during his time in Scotland after moving north of the border in 2015. He helped Rangers win promotion from the Scottish Championship and lift the Challenge Trophy during his first season in Glasgow.

Henderson, one of United’s most consistent performers during their climb into European contention, is scheduled to return to his parent club Manchester United at the end of the month. Wilder wants to renew his agreement for another 12 months but has yet to receive an indication from Old Trafford as to whether that will be possible.

Darren Ward, United’s goalkeeping coach, said: “We have followed his (Foderingham’s) development for a number of years and are delighted to be able to bring him in to bolster the goalkeeping department to give us options and competition.”
