Walker, who came through the ranks at Bramall Lane before joining Spurs and later moving to City, shared a screenshot of the message on his own Instagram account.

Although the identity of the sender had been blanked out, the message to Walker contained disgusting racist slurs – and was sent just hours after football clubs in England jointly announced a social media blackout this weekend to make a stand against online racism and abuse.

Walker shared the screenshot with the caption: “When is this going to stop?!” and tagged the official Instagram account in his message.

According to The Mirror, Facebook – who own Instagram – said that the account of the abuser was disabled before Walker shared the screenshot.

Clubs, including the Blades, will this weekend switch off their social media profiles in a show of solidarity against online abuse.

The boycott involves clubs and players from the Premier League, EFL and Women’s Super League, as well as governing bodies such as the FA.
