It perhaps provided Garry Monk’s men with a marker for where they need to be this season, but who stood out in a disappointing return to action?
Let’s take a look at the player ratings from the owls trip to the Hawthorns.
5. Morgan Fox - 6
Another solid enough display. A couple of moments aside, he coped with the threat of West Brom's multiple attacking threats nicely and struck the crossbar for what would have been - unbelievably - his second goal in as many games. Photo: Steve Ellis
6. Sam Hutchinson - 5
A big part of Hutchinson's job is to break up play and he didn't do that nearly enough - West Brom had the best of play in midfield. In Pereira and Diangana the Baggies have two of the league's liveliest playmakers - he won't be the last to lose out. Photo: Steve Ellis
7. Barry Bannan - 6
Anonymous and visibly frustrated throughout. Gave both Palmer and Murphy both barrels at different stages. Couldn't get into the game and was afforded little space by West Brom. Photo: Steve Ellis
8. Kieran Lee - 6
Looked sluggish in a midfield that was overrun for large periods. Linked play nicely as ever in fits and starts, but the game passed him by a touch. Wednesday looked brighter with Luongo's legs when he replaced him after 70 minutes. Photo: Steve Ellis
