Exeter have been on the lookout for a new manager since they lost Matt Taylor to Rotherham United earlier this month, and now it has been confirmed that they’ve brought in Caldwell to be his replacement.

Caldwell has previously managed at Wigan Athletic – with whom he won promotion to the Championship – as well as Chesterfield and Partick Thistle, and he’ll now be hoping to get off to a good start down south in England – starting with this week’s game against Derby County.

Nick Hawker, chair of Exeter City Supporters’ Trust, and Julian Tagg, club president, said of the appointment, “As a supporter-owned club, Exeter City is unique and it was vitally important that we chose the right person to continue our journey. The club is in a strong position, having been promoted to League One and made a great start to the campaign, which sees us in eighth position in the table. Gary brings a great deal of experience to our club and we’re excited and optimistic for the future.

“We would also like to put on record our thanks to interim manager Kevin Nicholson and Jon Hill for stepping in to manage the team over the last couple of weeks.”

Caldwell and Bannan played together with the Scottish national team for a couple of years, and the new Grecians boss was in the starting XI when the Owls captain got his first international assist in a win over Lithuania in 2011.
