Moore has been a popular appointment among the Wednesday fanbase and one player who knows the former Doncaster Rovers manager has expressed his delight at the 46-year-old taking over at Hillsborough.

Ex-Owl Jermaine Johnson, who made over 250 appearances for Wednesday scoring 30 goals, was an international team mate of Moore’s with Jamaica and he says not only should the supporters be glad he got the job, but the squad should, too.

“This makes me really happy because I know the type of person he is and I know the club and players are gonna like him. He is very humble and a passionate person about what he's doing. I wish him and the club the very best,” said Johnson.

Speaking to the Jamaica Observer, he added: “Plus he's a black coach getting the chance to coach one of the biggest-name clubs in the country.

“This club is one of the first clubs in the world and the fan base is a massive one. It's like a family when you talk about SWFC. This is a real breakthrough in British football.

“SWFC is my favourite club because that's where I find back the love for football, and the love they showed me from day one made me feel welcomed to do my best.”

Johnson, 40, who is still playing for Tivoli Gardens in his native country, says he hopes himself to because a coach in Britain when he finally hangs up his boots.

He said: “I don't have any coaching badges yet, but with the number of caps I have for the national team, I automatically pass one already. So, I just need to sort out the next one. I want to do it here in Jamaica and then apply for jobs over there [England].”

Moore kicks off a new managerial era at Wednesday with a massive relegation scrap against Rotherham United at Hillsborough tonight. The Owls and the Millers are second and third bottom of the table, respectively.
