The 26-year-old was initially rumoured as a makeweight for a move the other way for Owls forward Jordan Rhodes, but it seems Rhodes is staying put at Hillsborough.

He is the son of former Wednesday loanee Dean Windass, who played for the club for a short while in 2001 before a similarly short-term loan move to Sheffield United the year after.

Owls boss Garry Monk will hope that Windass will offer a new dimension to the Wednesday attack, with the energetic playmaker able to play between the lines of attacking midfield or as a centre forward.

Monk has made it clear he has wanted to add firepower to his squad ahead of tonight’s deadline.

Windass, a product of Huddersfield Town's youth system, joined Scottish big boys Rangers from Accrington Stanley before the 2016 season.

He made 73 appearances for the Ibrox club during a turbulent two-year period, chipping in with 19 goals and 13 valuable assists.

Windass moved to Wigan for a fee thought to be in the region of £2m in August 2018. He notched five goals as the Latics retained their Championship status.

But attacking midfielder Windass has been in and out of the side this time around. He has played 15 times, scoring four goals, but was left out of the Latics matchday squad for their recent duels with Swansea City and the Owls.
