The 20-year-old, who has been widely linked with the Owls having been recalled from his loan spell at Leeds United at the start of the month, is the subject of interest from several Championship clubs including favourites Bristol City.

Wednesday boss Garry Monk has repeatedly refused to rule the club out of a move for the England youth starlet, but has admitted there is stiff competition in the loans market for ‘top talent’ this time out.

But last night Arsenal appeared to have given the game away, with Bristol City’s emblem emblazoned alongside Nketiah’s player profile, suggesting the youngster was on loan with the club.

It would represent a knock for the Owls, who have already missed out on the loan signing of Liverpool forward Rhian Brewster to Swansea City.

They have been more heavily linked with a move for Crystal Palace’s Connor Wickham, who has previously enjoyed two loan spells at the club in 2013 and 2014.

“Going into the window, with the players fit, (the target) was to add to what we have got,” he said. “Now losing one of your key players, not only is it the original (plan) to help, but it’s now to replace as well.

“But we are looking at a market of loans, which is competitive, and the type of window that it is, a lot of teams are after the same players.

“It’s difficult, but we are working hard behind the scenes to see if we can get to a solution on a few options. That’s ongoing.”
