Friday evening’s 2-0 defeat to Bochum not only put their playoff hopes in further doubt but pushed them further towards the lower reaches of the 2.Bundesliga. St Pauli now sit just five points and three places from danger.

Sheffield Wednesday loanee Matt Penney, fresh from extending his Owls stay to the end of the 2020/21 season, regained his place on the bench after he was left out in consecutive fixtures but was not introduced.

Luhukay surprised many by handing debuts to two youngsters in the Bochum defeat, meaning he has now used a total of 36 players this season with many supporters questioning his selection.

Asked about selection he said: “Every player in the squad has the right to play whether they're 19 or 32. I don't look back. It's not about young or old - it's about how you perform.”

St Pauli are now four matches without a win since their late 1-0 victory over Nuremberg the first week back after the league’s suspension.

Speaking after Friday evening’s defeat, Luhukay said: “All in all, Bochum deserved to win because we never really got going and struggled to carve out any opportunities.”

Dutchman Luhukay, 56, endured a torrid spell at Wednesday, winning only 16 of his 48 matches before his sacking after less than a year in the job in December 2018.
