The Owls have been guilty of not converting promising performances into points in recent weeks but were able to do so against an Addicks side not quite on their level and battling injury and illness.

Speaking after the match, Monk described his satisfaction at the performance and praised the fans, over 2,500 of whom made the trip down to the capital for a 12.30 kick off in front of Sky TV cameras.

“I am very pleased for the players and the fans,” Monk said. “We got our rewards for the performance.

“We haven’t got what we felt we deserved from the last four or five games but we got exactly what we deserved today.”

There were a number of stand-out performances from across the Wednesday line-up, with the experienced spine of Tom Lees, Barry Bannan and Fletcher particularly impressive.

And Monk admitted the display was exactly what he wanted from a side he selected partly for their wise heads.

He said: “It was a really strong show of character, spirit and togetherness. I thought the performance was exactly where it needed to be.

“We did very well defensively. I thought we made minimal mistakes defensively and offensively we took some of our chances.”
