Sheffield Wednesday: Happy Bannan hails ‘special’ supporters

Cheered on by over 1,200 Wednesdayites, Carlos Carvalhal’s men battled back from two nil down to secure a 2-2 draw at Cardiff City last week.

Former Aston Villa trainee Bannan told The Star: “I have been really lucky in my career because the Palace fans were a really good bunch of fans but the Wednesday supporters are special.

“I always look back on that Arsenal cup game when Hillsborough was full. It was an unbelievable atmosphere that night.

“They travelled in their numbers to Cardiff. It is unbelievable that we had over 1,000 fans make the trip as they wouldn’t have got home until late.”

The 26-year-old, who is “very close” to penning a new long-term contract, has wowed Owls supporters with his tenacious, hard-working performances. He said it is a “no-brainer” extending his Hillsborough stay.

“I am probably the happiest I have been in my life,” he said. “When you feel that love from the fans, it makes you want to go out and give that extra 10 per cent for them.”

Owls will be chasing their first win on the road since October 23 when they take on third-from-bottom MK Dons tonight.

“They’re all big games coming one after another,” he said. “Obviously MK Dons are struggling at the moment and you could look at it one way and say we should go there and win.

“But football doesn’t work like that. They are fighting for their lives and we’re fighting to get into the play-offs so it will make for a good game.”
