West Brom in £3m move for Brunt

SHEFFIELD Wednesday have agreed with West Brom on a fee for Chris Brunt.

It is believed to be around 3m for the Owls winger who attracted an undisclosed offer from Fulham in June and rejected a new Hillsborough contract last month.

Brunt is now free to talk to Championship promotion hopefuls West Brom and is believed to want a move - though up to now he has expressed a wish to play in the Premiership.

Owls chief executive Kaven Walker said: "We've always said if a club matches our valuation of Chris we would not stand in his way.

"West Brom offered what we're looking for - everybody has their price.

"Chris made it crystal clear to us that he does not want to be at Sheffield Wednesday.

"The manager won't get all the money that we receive for Brunt, but he will be able to spend some of it, and we're currently in talks with a couple of midfielders."

Wednesday had hoped to persuade Brunt to stay but talks on a new deal broke down. Manager Brian Laws said at the time that the wage demand from the player's advisors was far in excess of what the club could pay.

Laws was hoping then to keep the winger for the last year of his contract and pointed out that Brunt would not go free next year as his age(under 24) would entitle the Owls to compensation.

However a tribunal-fixed amount would have been far less than the Northern Ireland international's current market value.

Laws also said last month that Brunt needed to keep performing for Wednesday to further his career and that hopefully he would achieve his Premiership ambition with the Owls.

But Wednesday are cashing in now and if the player wants to go then the club may well have influenced by this factor as well.

Brunt is now beginning a three-match domestic ban for his pre-season sending-off in Holland but remains eligible for Northern Ireland's Euro 2008 qualifier against Liechtenstein a week tomorrow and is in Nigel Worthington's first squad.
