What Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk had to say about the late penalty given against his side in 1-1 draw at Derby County

After a dominant first half that saw the Owls take the lead through Steven Fletcher’s 11th goal of the season, but they were pegged back in a second period that saw the home side have the better of the game.

Odubajo was sent off in the final moments for a second yellow card on an evening to forget for the full-back, who’s tangle with Rams substitute Jack Marriott allowed for Chris Martin’s 82nd-minute penalty.

And while Monk admitted his frustration at the decision, he allowed that it was a decision that is often given in favour of the home side.

“In those situations you give the referee a decision to make,” he said. “Sometimes the go for you, sometimes they don’t.

“Technically it’s probably not [a penalty], it’s probably marginal, but you can’t give the referee a decision can you? Especially with the atmosphere and everything like that.

“I have to watch it back properly but he makes that decision and we’ve got to live with that.”

Monk said that after that impressive first period for his side the match became too fragmented and his players lost control of the encounter.

Derby, having had only two shots in the first half, were able to get a foothold and completed twice as many passes as Wednesday in the second period.

He said: “It became really scrappy. Neither team showed much composure in the second half and as you’d expect the home team got some of the momentum.

“I think we were holding n for those three points at that moment. We made changes because we had tired legs and then the penalty changed that.

“Then obviously the red card, Mo going off, we had to fight to keep that one point.

“We showed some character the character is there, we just have to keep working with the players to sustain what we saw in that first 35 minutes for the full game.”
